This is a template-free method, (without triangular rulers), to construct 14” Op-art Kaleidoscope blocks. The process involves making large Kaleidoscope blocks that are cut-up into sections, rearranged, and then reassembled. Students are encouraged to experiment and play with the positioning of the block sections to develop a pleasing design on the work-wall. Make a 9-block or a 16-block quilt.

Basic sewing supplies (including thread, pins, scissors and seam ripper)
Sewing machine in good working order, extension cord
Iron and small ironing board (unless provided by workshop host)
Cutting mat – large enough to cut 17” squares, and rotary cutter
Rulers - 6” x 24” and 15” square (Omnigrid recommended)
Masking tape and Sharpie pen
Batting or flannel backed vinyl table cloth for work-wall

Fabric – fat quarters or yardage – enough to cut 10 or 16 squares measuring 17”.
One yard yields four 17” squares. One fat quarter yields one 17” square.
Additional fabric required for sashing (if any) and borders.
.
There are several options for fabric choices, but the key to success is to include a wide range of values.
For 16 blocks, you should have at least four very dark and four very light 17” squares. The remaining eight could be four medium-dark and four medium-light, or you could stick with the very light and very dark in equal numbers.

Suggestions:
Hand-dyed or batik fabrics – four one yard pieces: one light, one light to medium light, one medium dark to dark, and one dark. Cut four 17” squares of each.
Black and white prints with a sprinkling of accent colors (e.g. red and yellow): 2 black, 2 white, 2 red, 2 yellow, 8 variety of black and white prints
Scrappy look – 16 different fabrics using similar quantities of darks and lights as in the other examples, e.g. garden theme with greens and florals.
Classic blue and white – be sure to include white or white on white and dark blue.

Cutting the 17” squares before class is recommended, but not required.
